1869 was the year when Café de Paris was born in Hokitika and after many years, it was re-born with the arrival of Pierre Esquilat who was an import thanks to Joy his wife.

Now Café de Paris is owned by Pierre and Joy Esquilat. Pierre was born in Paris and later emigrated to Australia where he and Joy met. After successfully managing several restaurants in Australia, they returned to the West Coast, Joy's home, and have now been here for 26 years bringing a touch of Paris to Hokitika.

Although Pierre and Joy are still actively involved in the Café de Paris, the restaurant is now managed by a selected team, allowing Pierre more time to concentrate on the Gourmet Catering side of this unique establishment.
